WHERE ARE CHINESE STUDENTS GOING?
For decades, China was the world’s dominant source of international students.
That remains true.
But where Chinese students want to study is changing.
China’s outbound student population recovered strongly after the pandemic.
And the destination map is becoming more diversified.
The traditional leaders remain powerful:
🇺🇸 United States
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
🇦🇺 Australia
🇨🇦 Canada
But Asia and continental Europe are gaining attention.
Research on Chinese student mobility shows increasing interest in:
🇯🇵 Japan
🇸🇬 Singapore
ðŸ‡ðŸ‡° Hong Kong
🇰🇷 South Korea
🇩🇪 Germany
🇫🇷 France
🇲🇾 Malaysia
Why?
Proximity.
Cost.
Safety.
Academic quality.
And increasingly:
career relevance.
One important signal comes from New Oriental’s 2023 survey of 9,551 Chinese students and parents.
Among prospective undergraduate students, the share considering the United States fell from 45% in 2019 to 34% in 2023.
Meanwhile, destinations such as Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore gained ground.
At graduate level, the UK remained the leading consideration, while the US also lost share.
The shift doesn’t mean Chinese students have stopped choosing the US or UK.
Far from it.
It means something more interesting:
Chinese students are developing a much larger menu of international education options.
And that matters to universities everywhere.
The global competition for Chinese students is no longer simply:
US vs UK vs Australia vs Canada.
Increasingly, it is:
The world vs the world.
