India has become one of the world’s biggest sources of international students.

NITI Aayog’s 2025 report on the internationalisation of Indian higher education, using Project Atlas data, shows how dramatically the picture changed between 2016 and 2024.
India’s leading destinations in 2024
🇨🇦 Canada — 427,000
🇺🇸 United States — 337,630
🇬🇧 United Kingdom — 185,000
🇦🇺 Australia — 122,202
🇩🇪 Germany — 42,997
🇦🇪 UAE — 25,000
🇷🇺 Russia — 24,940
🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan — 16,500
That’s not simply a search for an overseas degree.
It is a search for the right combination of:
🎓 Education quality
💰 Affordability
🌎 International exposure
💼 Career opportunities
🛂 Immigration and post-study options
And the destination map is widening.
In 2016, the USA was India’s #1 destination.
By 2024, Canada had moved into the top position, while Germany and the UAE had become increasingly visible alternatives.
The bigger number is even more striking:
India’s Ministry of External Affairs reported 1,882,318 Indian students abroad across 153 countries in 2025, including more than 1.25 million in universities and tertiary institutions.
India isn’t just a major student-sending country anymore.
India is one of the central markets shaping global higher education.
For universities worldwide, the question is increasingly:
