WHERE ARE AMERICANS STUDYING?
The American college experience is becoming more international.
And the numbers tell an interesting story.
According to IIE’s Open Doors 2025 data:
🎓 298,180 U.S. students studied abroad for academic credit in 2023/24.
That was 6% higher than the previous year.
But here is the bigger story:
🇺🇸 More than 95,000 American students were enrolled in full-degree programmes overseas, according to Project Atlas partner data.
This means the conversation is moving beyond:
“Should I spend a semester abroad?”
towards:
“Could I earn my entire degree abroad?”
Where are Americans going?
The traditional European destinations remain extremely strong:
🇮🇹 Italy
🇪🇸 Spain
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
🇫🇷 France
Together, these four destinations accounted for 45% of U.S. study-abroad students in 2023/24.
But American students are travelling much further too.
Open Doors recorded U.S. students studying in more than 170 destinations worldwide.
And the attraction isn’t only academic.
Students are looking for:
🌎 International experience
🎓 Different academic systems
💰 Alternative education costs
🗣️ Language and cultural immersion
💼 Global career exposure
The world is becoming part of the American student’s education map.
And that creates opportunities for universities far beyond the traditional study-abroad destinations.
The next generation of American students may not simply study abroad.
They may study globally.
