๐ŸŒŽ AMERICANS ARE LOOKING BEYOND AMERICA FOR COLLEGE

๐ŸŒŽ AMERICANS ARE LOOKING BEYOND AMERICA FOR COLLEGE

For decades, “study abroad” usually meant spending a semester overseas.

That’s changing.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ More Americans are now considering something much bigger:

Getting their entire degree abroad.

According to the Institute of International Education (IIE), more than 90,000 Americans were enrolled in full-degree programs overseas in 2025.

And here’s the striking part:

๐ŸŽ“ 67% were undergraduates.

A decade ago, undergraduates represented just 35%.

Why are American students looking overseas?

๐Ÿ’ฐ Lower tuition in many countries
๐ŸŽ“ Alternative pathways to prestigious universities
๐ŸŒŽ International exposure
๐Ÿง  Personal growth and independence
๐Ÿ’ผ Global career opportunities
โœˆ๏ธ The experience of actually living in another country

And the destinations are expanding.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง UK
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spain
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italy
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Ireland
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Japan
๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Germany
๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท France
๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ Mexico
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Canada
โ€ฆand many more.

Meanwhile, traditional study-abroad participation is also growing.

298,180 U.S. students studied abroad for academic credit in 2023/24 โ€” up 6% from the previous year.

The message is clear:

International education is no longer just an add-on to an American college experience.

For a growing number of students, the international experience IS the college experience.
