CBIE: Why Should You Study Abroad?

Why should students take the leap and study abroad? Dr. Sheila Embleton from York University talks about the academic and personal benefits students can experience.

00:22
but it’s it’s about personal growth and
00:26
whether that’s personal growth just in
00:28
the sense of maturing being able to live
00:31
away from your normal support system
00:35
live away from your normal life where
00:36
you just know how everything is done you
00:38
know where the grocery store is you know
00:39
how to go into a post office where that
00:42
becomes a challenge and so you it puts
00:45
you out of your comfort zone and every
00:46
time you’re out of your comfort zone you
00:48
do learn and you do grow personally so
00:51
you grow in confidence and maturity I
00:53
think and that that just sets you up
00:56
well for whatever you’re going to be
00:57
doing afterwards then of course there
00:59
are the obvious things you learn like
01:01
possibly a language possibly a skill
01:03
possibly another culture you know you
01:08
get to know another part of the world so
01:09
you of course learn these these other
01:11
more explicit skills as well and for
01:14
students who are still not convinced I
01:16
do talk to them about the fact that many
01:18
employers now are specifically looking
01:21
for international experience and if
01:24
nothing else having international
01:26
experience will mark them out as
01:27
compared to all the other people who
01:29
have bas or BS CS or MBAs or whatever it
01:33
is having the international experience
01:35
will distinguish them so the specific
01:37
skills the general skills and just
01:40
marking yourself out from from other
01:41
people I first started coming to them
01:47
while I was vpa at York and it was just
01:50
a way to actually learn about what’s
01:53
going on in international and meet
01:55
people from across the country from
01:56
other institutions and so on and learn
01:58
from them and also people from other
02:01
walks of life I mean obviously we have a
02:03
lot of people from foreign affairs here
02:04
and so on as well so it for me it
02:07
started as I think a learning experience
02:09
but I think it quickly became a sharing
02:12
experience
02:12
and so just being used to sharing
02:15
information with people it’s a good
02:17
place to come just to meet all the other
02:18
people across the country and actually
02:20
beyond who are interested in
02:22
internationalization so I really come
02:24
for for those reasons
